In Jane Austen's England, Oxford and Cambridge were the premier Universities for gentlemen of means. Austen characters are no different, and we learn the following about gentlemen's education in her novels:
- George Wickham, we are explicitly told, was educated at Cambridge with the support of Mr. Darcy Senior.
- Presumably, Fitzwilliam Darcy was at Oxford or Cambridge at about the same time.
