Betty appears to be a maid in the service of Mrs. Jennings.
At one point, when calculating how she might aid Lucy and Edward in their quest to get married and set up a household, Mrs. Jennings says “I believe I could help them to a housemaid, for my Betty has a sister out of place, that would fit them exactly.”
