Dr. Davies is described by Anne Steele as “a very smart beau” who accompanied the Steele sisters from Plymouth to London in a post-chaise, ultimately paying more than his fair share of the fare.
Later on in the novel, it seems fairly clear that he is interested in Miss Steele. At one point she says “everybody laughs at me so about the Doctor and I cannot think why. My cousins say they are sure I have made a conquest, but for my part I declare I never think about him from one hour’s end to another…The Doctor is no beau of mine.”
