Mr. Pratt is the uncle of Lucy and Anne Steele and lives in Longstaple, near Plymouth in Devonshire. We know that his nieces stay with him often.
Mr. Pratt appears to work as a private tutor and educated Edward Ferrars for four years out of his home. Their bond appears to be fairly close and Edward spends significant time with the family even after the termination of his tutoring.
It is unclear how much Mr. Pratt may have known about or encouraged the relationship between Lucy and Edward. Certainly, Lucy’s marriage could be advantageous to him, but we never hear of him taking an active role in forwarding their courtship.
There is another character named Pratt in Pride and Prejudice. He is a member of the Regiment at Meryton.
