Combe Magna is the estate home owned by John Willoughby. We know that it is in Somersetshire and between 10 and 30 miles from Cleveland, where Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Palmer live.
As the characters never travel to Combe Magna, we have little information about its design. Elinor seems to think that the estate brings in around £2,000, which suggests it is fairly modest, perhaps explaining why the general attitude is that inheriting Allenham will significantly enhance Willoughby’s stature.
Mr. Palmer says that the house is “as vile a spot as I ever saw in my life,” which may mean it is old fashioned and in need of repair, in contrast to the Palmers’ “modern-built” home.
