Mr. Phillips

Family and Situation

Mr. Phillips is the husband of Mrs. Philips née Gardiner. The narrator tells us that he “had been a clerk to [her] father and succeeded him in the business," meaning that he married the boss's daughter and succeeded to the business, in the place of natural born son Edward Gardiner.

By all appearances, Mr. Phillips lives (and likely plies his trade) in the heart of Meryton, Hertfordshire. We know from something Lydia says that he has servant named Richard who he is thinking of sacking around the time Mr. Collins comes to town.

Appearance

When seen from Lizzy’s point-of-view, he is described as “broad-faced, stuffy uncle Phillips, breathing port wine.”

Character

Mr. Phillips has no lines, but we're told that he had offered a general invitation for members of the regiment at his home, presumably at his wife's urging.
