Family and Situation
We are never told how well established the Longs are in the neighborhood, though the fact that Mrs. Long leaves town just before the Meryton Assembly suggests that she has at least some connections outside the neighborhood. We are never told of her children directly, but we do know she has at least two marriageable nieces.
Other Connections
Mrs. Long is one of the matrons of the Meryton, Hertfordshire area and seems to mingle with peers throughout the neighborhood. We know she is friendly with Mrs. Bennet and is actually the person who tells her that Netherfield Park is let at last.
Character
In temperament, very little that is complementary is said about her. Mrs. Bennet describes her as “a selfish, hypocritical woman” when she thinks she will not be able to secure an introduction to Mr. Bingley through her, but Mr. Bennet does little to contradict her. She is also the denizen of Hertfordshire who is mortally offended that Darcy sits next to her at the Meryton Assembly for half an hour and never speaks to her.
