Deceased before the novel begins, Mr. Brandon Senior was the father of Mr. Brandon, Colonel Brandon and at least one daughter. He was also the uncle and guardian of a young woman named Eliza, who had a greater fortune than the Brandon family, whose estate was “much encumbered.”
Based on the backstory described by Colonel Brandon, Mr. Brandon Senior was a cold and calculating man. Within the narrative, he is accused of affiancing Eliza to marry the elder brother against her will in order to keep her fortune in the family, blocking her planned elopement with Colonel Brandon and separating the lovers, even locking Eliza in her room, until she promised to comply with his original plans.
