The Carey family appears to live in Newton, Devonshire, which is located in the general vicinity of Barton Park. At different points in the novel, the “two Miss Careys” come to Barton in order to join the planned picnic at Whitwell, Sir John offers to round up “The Careys” for a tea party and Mrs. Dashwood leaves Margaret with the family when she rushes to Marianne’s sickbed.
